

Hi! My name is Ms. Russo. I teach first grade here at LCCS. This is my 5th year teaching first grade. I am so excited to begin this journey with you! We are going to have so much fun learning new things, getting to know our friends and growing throughout the year!

Launching Reading Workshop: familiarizing with Reading Workshop model (Daily Five) , choosing “just right” books, make accurate predictions based on the title and cover of a book, re-read books, picture walks

Using strategies to figure out unknown words: use pictures, beginning sounds, ending sounds, little words in big words, skip and return strategy, decode nonsense words, bold and large sized words, explanation/question marks (expression)

Visualization: rereading texts to understand what is happening, mental pictures, making inferences, creating a picture in your mind

Retelling: use specific character names in retell, problem and solution, setting, transition words, sequence of events (beginning, middle, end)

Connections: make connections and refer to text, identify important ideas in a story, identify questions to better understand the story

Non-fiction: identify and know the purpose of various non-fiction text features, activate prior knowledge when previewing a non-fiction book

How-to writing: write a how-to book, sequence instructions, illustrate their book with pictures that teach, create a “snappy beginning” and end to their books

Addition and subtraction: understand that numbers can be broken into parts of a whole, find combinations in numbers up to 10, find 2-addend combinations of a number, joining parts make a whole, two numbers can be added in any order, use addition and subtraction strategies to solve story problems

Place Value: numbers can be used to tell how many, numbers can be classified and represented in different ways, base ten numeration system, unitize a group of tens and ones as a whole, compose and decompose numbers by tens and ones, greater than, less than, equal to

Engineering: brainstorm using engineer design plan, use questions and observations to develop ideas, sketch, reflect

Light and sound: create sound instruments understanding vibrating materials make sound, objects can be seen when illuminated, sound and light are used for communication

- Post Office: operate a post office, locate New Jersey and Jersey City on a map, identify names of each location, write their address, write a letter, address an envelope, create a stamp, make change of a dime
