Welcome to 5th grade Social Studies & Science!
I am Mr. August, the 5th grade Social Studies and Science teacher at LCCS. A native of England, I have been a teacher for 14 years, previously working at international schools in London, Panama and The Netherlands. I am married to a US citizen and we have 3 children (a 10 year old girl and twin 5 year old boys), and after several years wondering round the globe we decided to settle in the USA in 2018. I look forward to many wonderful years at LCCS.
Social Studies:
5th graders will study American history, starting with the first human settlers of the Americas, working through the colonial period, the Revolutionary War, the creation of the United States, US expansion westwards and ending with the US civil war. We will use primary and secondary sources to understand how and why the USA was created, how the nation continues to evolve and our rights and responsibilities as citizens.

Science:
All students will explore plant science, energy in organisms, the dynamics of ecosystems, earth's systems, human impacts on Earth, forces and the universe. Our science class will be highly exploratory and will enhance the students' critical thinking, problem-solving and deductive reasoning skills. Through productive group talk in inquiry-based science, we will exponentially increase student learning.
Assessments:
Students will be given the opportunity to be graded in 4 areas. Tests and quizzes
will be given sparingly throughout the trimesters; but there should not be more than 2 tests per subject for each one. Project assignments, whether individual or group oriented, will be given more often. Students should expect to complete at least 4 projects, differing in size, per trimester. Finally, homework is given in several different ways: it can be reading a section, conducting scientific research, answering the textbook’s questions, or completing work we began in class. The percentage for each category in a student’s final grade are as follows: homework is 5%, class participation is 10%, classwork is 35%, quizzes are 5% Projects are 30%, and Tests are 15%.
